Red Moon Eclipse Photos
Our great spiraling moon was dark red, big and full last night during her spectacular eclipse by the earth's shadow. I went to watch the event down by the Embarcadero near the foot of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. Somehow I missed the early moments of the moon rising because it was already in its totality while on the rise and hard to spot. Also, I wasn't looking in the right direction. It rose a little further southeast in the sky than I expected. Nevertheless, at the first moment I saw the moon, it was very exciting and this is what I saw. It was my first shot. I took the picture using my Nikon 5700 Coolpix mounted on a tripod at 4 second exposure / 4.2 F stop.

I love seeing the edge of the earth's shadow on the moon, especially in the last picture, which I took near the end of the unveiling. The beautiful Bay Bridge also photographed nicely; my photo at twilight was taken with a 2 second exposure while my night shot was taken with an 8 second exposure.

It was too cloudy here to see the moon. :(
At least now I can say I "saw" the eclipse, if slightly later than the rest of the planet.

Beautiful photos, btw. Makes me want to take the time to learn how to play with my Kodak digital cam's exposure settings - night shots are the only thing it seems to struggle with on automatic.

Thanks again for sharing such beauty.

Thanks for your comment.

San Francisco was extremely lucky with a clear sky last night. Yes, that's right, the only way to get decent night shots is by manually setting your camera's exposure. Good luck.

You're very welcome. Sorry for your overcast weather at such a critical time. I'm extremely thankful it was at all possible to see. Usually SF is cloudy too starting around this time of year.

These are gorgeous! It's interesting to see how different it looked over by you. Over here (in Georgia) it looked like the moon disappeared from the bottom - up.

Stunning photos~

Really, that's cool.

I just felt an earthquake jolt. Funny, they usually happen during eclipses. My heart skipped a beat. It was about 2 minutes ago. I'm going to check the magnitude now on the quake site.

The different colors that the shadow of the earth takes on the moon relate to how bad the air is in your neck of the woods. The moon disappeared in shadow for me as well since I live in Las Vegas where the air quality is horrid. Frisco must have better air quality for it to look the way it did.

i kicked myself for forgetting to go out and see it. i saw it when it was almost gone (at 9:50something). the bridge photos look GORGEOUS! how awesome is it that the moon looks so big and close and round and just wow. from L.A. i could see it but it was small and up high (in your bridge pics it seems like it was on the horizon or it was a little above eye lever. but then again, you saw it during the eclipe, i went out there late). i took pics too but i doubt they'll come out nice. *kicks self again* next time.

Thanks, no problem. If I could do it again, I would have done it differently too last night. No worries, there are more total eclipses coming up.

You know, I've been following your LJ for a while now, after a guy I know pointed it out for me. He, as a male of course, thought it was slightly disturbing. But I was instantly taken and intrigued. Not only because I've always appreciated creative and beautiful forms of expression, but because I am a woman that is not blessed with monthly bleedings. Aside from that, your art is sophisticated and has a depth and quality that the world has not seen for a very long time. And I guess I just wanted to come out and finally say... your work, here in my little corner of the world, is not only greatly appreciated but wonderfully admired.

Those first two are particularly beautiful. I intended to go out and shoot it here, but it slipped my mind until it was too late. I heard it was overcast here, anyway... But I am glad to see it here. Thank you.
